BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This learning styles questionnaire was developed by Peter Honey and Alan Mumford, based upon the work of Kolb. They identified four distinct learning styles or preferences: Activist, Reflector, Theorist and Pragmatic. These are the learning approaches that individuals naturally prefer and they recommend that in order to maximize one's own personal learning each learner ought to:
- Honey and Mumford (Peter and Alan) are best known for their learning style questionnaire. This self-administered questionnaire determines your preferred learning style.
- Knowing your learning style can accelerate your learning as you undertake activities that best fit your preferred style.
- Knowing your learning style can also help avoid repeating mistakes by undertaking activities that strengthen other styles For example, if you tend to “jump in at the deep end”, consider spending time reflecting on experiences before taking action.

They identified four distinct learning styles or preferences: Activist, Reflector, Theorist and Pragmatic. These are the learning approaches that individuals naturally prefer and they recommend that in order to maximize one's own personal learning each learner ought to:
- understand their learning style
- seek out opportunities to learn to use that style
- Activists - who are ‘hands-on’ learners and prefer to have a go and learn through trial and error
- Reflectors - who are ‘tell me’ learners and prefer to be thoroughly briefed before proceeding
- Theorists - who are ‘convince me’ learners and want reassurance that a project makes sense
- Pragmatists - who are ‘show me’ learners and want a demonstration from an acknowledged expert.
my results
PERSONAL REFLECTION
After taking the Honey and Mumford Learning Style Questionnaire and tallying the results, I have come to realize that I am essentially a Reflector (8) and a Theorist (6). Being a Reflector, I like to observe and ponder before leaping in. In fact, I am quite thoughtful, thorough and methodical. The problem is that sometimes I am slow to make up my mind and reach a decision. Being a theorist, I feel I need models, concepts and facts in order to engage in the learning process. Indeed, I am very much into analyzing and synthesizing information. The problem is that I have low tolerance for uncertainty, disorder and ambiguity.
